Garden Bird Gallery

Robin threat display.

Welcome to my

Garden Bird Gallery

All the photographs have been taken in my average sized town back garden over the last three years. I have gone progressively more natural with my planting and that seems to attract lots more wildlife, including butterflies, newts, toads, frogs, hedgehogs, bats, and even a very young rabbit that ate all the young runner bean pants.

With all the changes and the availability of water in the form of two small ponds means that there are always birds in the garden, 39 species so far.

The latest additions are a pair of over-wintering Blackcaps and two Common Redpolls that are considered rare in Shropshire so are awaiting conformation from the records committee. The cold spell in Jan 2013 added Fieldfare & Mistle Thrush to the list.

June 2015 - The robin came top of a poll to become the UK's first national bird.

Common in most gardens, the Blackbirds best loved for its beautiful mellow song leading the dawn chorus and again probably at its best in the late evening in spring and early summer.

Out of the breading season the Blackbird is not a sedentary bird and during a day you may think that you have seen two or three popping in and out of the garden but there may well have seen a dozen or more different birds visiting. This is evident on a morning after a heavy frost and the ground is hard when I have seen as many as ten in the garden together.

Despite the Blackcap in Britain being mainly a summer visitor with most of our our birds moving south across to Europe it is far more likely to be seen in the winter time feeding in gardens. The number of wintering birds has increased markedly over recent years, and is added to by birds migrating from Germany and Eastern Europe.

From mid April onward there are many Blackcaps locally in the wooded and shrubby areas and their song can be heard well into summer, but I rarely see then in the garden until winter sets in when they will come in to feed on fruit like apples and especially pears.

Although the treecreeper is present locally all year round and frequents wooded areas it is only an occasional visitor to the garden. Even when it does visit it is quite elusive, as it creeps its way up tree trunks in search of insects, and is not easy to photograph. I finally managed to get a few quick shots of this one to add to my garden list.
